We all had a great time at our Aerospace Discovery weekend camp out October 21-23. The Troop had been working toward earning the Aviation merit badge for three weeks. Taking a ride in an airplane is part of earning the badge, and 16 Scouts were able to do just that.
Local pilot volunteers took kids ages 7-17 up in their small aircraft for an aerial tour over Lakeland. We also had an in depth tour of the workings of the unusual fire trucks kept on site at Lakeland Linder Airport, spent a couple hours in the Aeronautical Museum, and then were able to participate in a conversation with an astronaut who is frequently sent to the International Space Station. He had an incredible slide show of his work in space. After his talk, he stayed around and answered questions, and talked to individual Scouts. Best of all, the weather was fantastically cool (for once). Another great camp out is on the books!
